Flat Flexible Cable (FFC) is a thin, lightweight, and highly flexible connector composed of flat copper conductors embedded in insulation (usually PET or polyimide). Primarily used in consumer electronics, automotive, and medical devices, FFCs save space, allow for tight routing, and facilitate board-to-board or board-to-display connections using Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) connectors.

There are two main types of FFCs, each of which has a different layout of contacts, or pins.
Type A (also known as Type 1, Type BD, or Same Side): Each end of the cable is lined with a row of pins, both of which lie on the same side of the FFC’s surface. This is the most commonly used type of FFC.
Type D (also known as Type 2, Type AD, or Opposite Side): Each end of the cable is lined with a row of pins, one of which lies on the top side of the FFC and the other on the bottom side.

FFC can be shielded on one or both sides. Any combination of traces can be attached to the shield to isolate individuals or groups of conductors. Shielding is laminated to the outside of the cable and consists of 0.5mil thick PET outer layer, adhesive, 0.3mil thick aluminum foil, and 1 mil thermoform bonding adhesive.
